Powertrain and driving experience. The most powerful four-cylinder unit of the latest engine generation, M-specific chassis, BMW xDrive.

A new, high-performance model with unmistakable M character at the top of the BMW X1 range. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive aims to deliver the driving pleasure in all conditions that is at the heart of the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept, thanks to the dynamism, agility and precision for which M models are renowned. The four-cylinder unit is part of the BMW Group’s new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics engines and utilises M TwinPower Turbo technology, delivering a maximum output of 221 kW/300 hp in Europe and an even higher 233 kW/317 hp in the United States and other selected markets.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 5.4 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The specific M chassis – which includes optional M Compound brakes for the first time on a performance model – combines with intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive to deliver incredible performance. The assertive character of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is clearly visible both inside and out. The new model comes with exclusive design and equipment features originally reserved only for BMW M GmbH’s high-performance cars. These include the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes and optional M Sport seats with illuminated M logo.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive also impresses in terms of digital technology: It is among the first models to feature the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. The market launch of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive will begin in October 2023 in the United States. Deliveries in Europe will begin in November 2023. The model will be built at the BMW Group’s Regensburg plant, along with all other variants of the new BMW X1, including the all-electric BMW iX1.

Even more power with the new four-cylinder engine.

The most powerful four-cylinder petrol unit in the latest generation of modular engines provides all the power the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive needs to deliver incredible performance. Several innovations distinguish these new engines from the previous generation. These include the adoption of the Miller cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and changes to camshaft timing, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas path.

Among the highlights of the 2.0-litre M unit are a new, extremely robust crankshaft drive, an optimised oil supply system for the pistons with cooling channels and shells and bank caps taken from the latest-generation inline-six petrol engine. The M TwinPower Turbo technology has been optimised by increasing the performance of the supercharger system and indirect air cooling while introducing dual injection for mixture preparation. It also features VANOS variable camshaft timing with optimised oil supply to the actuator and fully variable VALVETRONIC valve timing. The engine generates its maximum power between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm, while maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) is available from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm.

The power delivery of the new four-cylinder unit is accompanied by an emotional soundtrack from the M-specific exhaust system. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first high-performance model from BMW M GmbH whose exhaust gases are channelled through two pairs of twin tailpipes. Set into the left and right side of the rear apron, they are a feature of BMW M’s high-performance models and have now also been adopted on the most powerful model in the compact SAV range.

Seven-speed Steptronic gearbox with dual clutch and M Sport Boost.

The seven-speed Steptronic gearbox fitted in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is distinguished by its ultra-quick shifting. Steering wheel-mounted paddles allow rapid manual intervention in the gear selection process. The M Sport Boost function is also available for exceptional speed. In this case, when the driver pulls the gear lever to the left for at least one second, all powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest setting.

Superior traction and agility: BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, mechanical limited slip differential on the front axle.

The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system ensures that drive power is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required in every situation. The system is always interconnected with the chassis control technology. An electro-hydraulically controlled engagement clutch allows the drive torque to be directed to the rear wheels within milliseconds, guaranteeing far superior traction, directional stability and sportiness. The all-wheel drive system is assisted in its task by the mechanical limited slip differential integrated in the seven-speed Steptronic gearbox of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. This serves to limit the speed difference between the front wheels. With a locking factor of up to 26 per cent, it increases traction on uneven terrain or in adverse weather conditions, while at the same time enhancing agility and driving dynamics when cornering at speed.

Adaptive M suspension and sports steering as standard.

Standard equipment on the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes M Adaptive Suspension, whose mechanically controlled, frequency-selective adjustable dampers promote agility and comfort over long distances. Pressure peaks within the dampers are attenuated with the help of additional active valves on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers a comfortable response when absorbing small bumps in the road surface, while maintaining the sporty characteristics of the shock absorbers in dynamic driving situations.

The M-specific chassis technology of the performance model also results in a 15 millimetre reduction in ride height compared to other BMW X1 variants. The sports steering, also standard, combines speed-sensitive Servotronic servo assistance with a very direct gear ratio.

Integrated braking system with M Compound brakes as an option.

The integrated braking system of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive responds with extreme precision to driver input, while providing excellent feedback via the brake pedal. The system combines brake activation, brake servo and brake control functions in a compact module, while an electric actuator is used to activate the required brake pressure.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first performance model from BMW M GmbH to be offered with the option of M Compound brakes, comprising four-piston fixed caliper brakes with 385 millimetre discs on the front wheels and single-piston floating caliper units with integrated parking brake and 330 millimetre discs on the rear wheels. The internally ventilated brake discs consist of a grey cast iron ring and an aluminium chamber. The M Compound brakes offer very comfortable braking, excellent feel and stable stopping power even under high loads. In addition, the weight has been minimised and the unsprung masses are substantially lower than with conventional braking systems. The brake callipers are painted grey and feature the M logo.

Limited wheel slip in the vicinity of the actuator for greater agility.

A particularly important contribution, together with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, to the BMW X1 M35i xDrive’s combination of agile handling and agility is made by the “near-actuator” wheel slip limitation technology. In this case, the traction control function is integrated into the engine management. This eliminates the long journey the signal has to make to the DSC control unit, which means that corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than with conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-automatic wheel slip limitation ensures optimal traction (even on slippery roads), unwavering composure in a straight line under heavy acceleration and excellent directional stability in corners.

19-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard.

Two-spoke 19-inch-diameter M light-alloy wheels complement the chassis specification of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. The standard light-alloy wheels are fitted with tyres 20 millimetres wider than on the previous model, giving the top-of-the-range model even more handling potential. The 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with exclusive two-spoke design and sports tyres are both available as options.

Design and equipment. An exclusive window on M performance.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive stands out from other SAV compacts not only through its superior performance, but also through its design. The M-specific design elements reflect the elite sports character of the new model with an intensity unmatched by any other high-performance model from BMW M GmbH.

The cabin of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive offers an extraordinarily sporty atmosphere already in its standard specification, and its distinctive aura can be further enhanced with exclusive options such as M Sport seats. M-specific content on the BMW Curved Display – a fully digital screen group consisting of the 10.25-inch information display and the control display with a 10.7-inch diagonal – keeps the driver’s focus on the sporty driving experience. Moreover, the most powerful variant of the compact VAS can be equipped with almost the entire range of options offered for the BMW X1 to optimise driving pleasure, comfort and personalisation.

Distinctive design with M details: M double kidney grille with twin horizontal bars, M exterior mirror caps, quadruple exhaust tailpipe.

The M-specific design elements of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive echo the performance of an exceptionally sporty car in terms of cooling air intake and aerodynamic balance. A front skirt with particularly large air intakes ensures that the engine, transmission and brakes can continue to work within their optimum temperature windows at all times, even under demanding driving conditions. Side skirt extensions, a model-specific roof spoiler and a rear skirt with diffuser inlay emphasise the performance character of the new flagship.

The BMW M double kidney grille of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive bears the M logo. The grille also features double horizontal bars – a detail previously only found on BMW M GmbH’s high-performance models. Looking at the car from the side, black M exterior mirror caps with a double-stem design stand out. Another distinctive feature is the four exhaust tailpipes, each 80 millimetres in diameter, integrated into the model-specific rear apron. As in the aforementioned high-performance models, these pairs of exhaust tailpipes are positioned to the extreme left and right of the rear of the BMW. X1 M35i xDrive, unmistakably signal the presence of an incredibly high-performance engine.
